Germany slashes air travel taxes—how much will you save?

Germany has announced a reduction in its air travel tax rates, offering lower costs for passengers. The changes apply to flights based on distance from Frankfurt am Main to the destination's largest airport. Travellers can expect savings depending on how far they fly. The new tax rates are structured into three distance categories. For destinations up to 2,500 kilometres away, the tax will fall from €15.53 to €13.03. This applies to shorter European trips and nearby international routes.

Flights covering between 2,500 and 6,000 kilometres will see a drop from €39.34 to €33.01. Many long-haul destinations within Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East fall into this bracket. The biggest reduction affects the longest journeys—those over 6,000 kilometres. Here, the tax decreases from €70.83 to €59.43. This includes flights to Asia, the Americas, and Australia. The Federal Ministry of Finance has confirmed that airlines must pass these savings directly to travellers. The tax adjustments are based on a fixed distance calculation, using Frankfurt am Main as the reference point for all flights.

The revised tax rates will lower the cost of flying for many passengers. Airlines are required to reflect these changes in ticket prices. The new structure takes effect immediately, with savings varying by destination distance.
