Absence of Captain Johannes Golla: Germany's Youthful Lineup Against Turkey

Handballers from Germany face Turkey without their captain Golla in the match - Germany Plays Handball Against Turkey sans Captain Golla

In an unexpected turn of events, Germany's handball king, Johannes Golla, won't be gracing the field for their final EM qualifier match against Turkey due to an injury. Coach Alfred Gislason confirmed the news before Sunday's game in Ludwigsburg without revealing the specific details. With the team's EM participation already secured, Golla's absence doesn't seem critical.

But don't let that fool you – Germany is still aiming for a glorious end to their qualification campaign. The team has already clinched the group victory and earned a spot in the final round from January 15 to February 1, 2026, in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, following their draw with Switzerland.

Now, the team is gearing up for an U30 formation battle against Turkey. Twelve out of the seventeen players hail from the 2000 year group or younger, including seven U21 World Champions from 2023. Team manager Benjamin Chatton admits that there's "an abundance of talent, but also significant gaps in experience."

Disappointed by their draw against Switzerland, the German team is eager to demonstrate improved performance in this finale. Coach Gislason expressed dissatisfaction with the team's performance, citing "obvious coordination problems" during their previous outing. So, expect a determined and youthful German side to take the court on Sunday!
