NHL Heavyweight Joins German Squad As World Championship Heats Up
Germany outlines strict prerequisites for hosting the World Cup tournament
The German ice hockey squad is rolling, defeating Hungary 6:1 in their World Championship opener. Next up is Kazakhstan on Sunday. However, noteable absentee NHL star Tim Stuetsle remains a no-show, but he's expected to join the team soon.
A Star's Long-Awaited Arrival
After days of waiting, Tim Stuetsle received the green light from the Ottawa Senators, making him eligible to play in the World Championship. The 23-year old phenom, who suffered a slight injury at the end of the playoffs, will arrive in Herning on Sunday and train with the German team on Monday morning. According to DEB sports director Christian Kuénast, "It was a test of patience for us. We would have liked to have resolved this earlier, but it wasn't possible."
From Sidelines to Action
This is Stuetsle's second World Championship, having had to leave the 2022 tournament early due to a knee injury, and his club vetoing his participation in the 2023 tournament due to a shoulder injury. But he's back, and he'll look to make a significant impact on the German squad.
Netminders of Might
Head coach Harold Kreis gave NHL goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer his first appearance in the training match against Hungary, with Mathias Niederberger expected to take the reins in the upcoming game against Kazakhstan. Kreis maintains that he possesses "two number-one goalies."
A Sluggish Start, A Strong Finish
Despite two early power play opportunities, the German squad struggled initially due to sloppy passing and poor ice quality, leading to unintentional errors. However, they managed to turn things around, with precise passes setting up Joshua Samanski for the opening goal and Dominik Kahun for the eventual 6:1 victory.
