Tim Stützle Joins Germany's WM Squad Late After NHL Clearance
Germany imposes stringent requirements for hosting the World Cup
Get ready for some hard-hitting action as Germany takes on Kazakhstan in their next World Championships match! But there's a twist, our star forward Tim Stützle won't be present for the opening games.
The German ice hockey squad stormed into the WM with a dominating 6:1 victory over Hungary in the first round. Now, the team, led by coach Harold Kreis, prepares to face Kazakhstan on Sunday at 16:20, live on ProSieben and MagentaSport.
Stützle's Late Arrival
After a long wait, the green light finally came from the Ottawa Senators in Canada. Stützle, the 23-year-old NHL star, will be jetting off to Herning over the weekend, ready to join the DEB team for training on Monday morning. DEB sports director Christian Kunast revealed, "It was a test of patience for us. We would have liked to have resolved this earlier, but it wasn't possible."
Stützle, who was slightly injured following the play-off defeat, will be participating in his second WM. His first outing ended prematurely due to a knee injury in 2022, and last year, his club prevented him from joining due to a shoulder injury.
Goalie Shuffling
Coach Kreis supplied NHL goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer with his first appearance during the first round, while Mathias Niederberger is anticipated to take over for the second game. Kreis emphasized that he has two top-tier goalkeepers at his disposal. The Berlin WM debutant Eric Mik, along with his club companion Manuel Wiederer and third goalkeeper Arno Tiefensee, have yet to make an official report.
Despite having two early power play opportunities, the DEB team struggled to find their rhythm during the first period, with passing precision lacking and the poor ice quality not helping matters. Justin Schutz paved the way for a fortunate opening goal, followed by a precise pass from Reichel, converted by Joshua Samanski for the 2:0 lead.
A Smoother Second Period
In the second period, Grubauer was kept busy due to sloppy play. Ehliz capitalized during the power play, though the referees annulled the goal due to goalie interference following a video review. Kalble, off a lightning-fast counterattack, and Tiffels after an impressive combination restored the TEAM's dominance, ensuring a comfortable lead before the final period. Ehl and Kahun continued the scoring spree in the final period.
In Hockey, unexpected stars can always shine, and Germany looks set to make another mark on the World Championships!
