After a successful inaugural match against Hungary at the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Sweden and Denmark, Germany's ice hockey team gears up for their next encounter with Kazakhstan. Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 12th (time TBA) as the action unfolds on ProSieben and MagentaSport.
Kazakhstan earned their spot in the competition with a hard-fought 2:1 victory against Norway in their opening game. With anticipation mounting, Germany's team led by Coach Harold Kreis is determined to maintain their winning streak.
In the team's opening game against Hungary, Joshua Samanski, Lukas Kalble, Frederik Tiffels, Alexander Ehl, and Swiss legionnaire Dominik Kahun scored the goals in a 6:1 victory in front of 6,184 spectators in the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning.
Trouble Brewing for Stützle and the NHL
NHL superstar Tim Stützle is expected to make a late entry into the stage due to his club commitments. Initially, there were some delays in securing his release from the Ottawa Senators, but he is now en route to Sweden and Denmark, with a tentative arrival on Sunday. "It was a test of patience for us," said DEB sports director Christian Kunast on MagentaSport.
This will be Stützle's second appearance at the World Championship for Germany. In 2022, he had to leave early due to a knee injury, and last year, his club vetoed his participation due to a shoulder injury. Philippe Grubauer, another NHL goalkeeper, made his first performance for the team, with Mathias Niederberger expected to take over between the pipes in the second game.
Despite an initial difficult start due to poor ice quality and careless mistakes, Germany managed to secure a comfortable victory against Hungary. "Just a solid first period," Kahun said on ProSieben, "with a few nervous mistakes at the beginning."
