Germany to Facilitate Return of Colonial-Era Artifacts - Germany Establishes Hub to Streamline Colonial Artifact Returns

Germany is setting up a central hub to streamline the return of artifacts and human remains from colonial contexts to their countries of origin. This move follows recent restitutions, such as the return of hundreds of Benin Bronzes to Nigeria. Lukas Denkmayr has been appointed to lead this initiative.

The new central point of contact, headed by Lukas Denkmayr, aims to simplify the process for foreign governments seeking the return of cultural goods and human remains from German museums and collections. This follows the agreement of common guidelines by federal and state representatives.

Germany has already made strides in this area, notably with the return of the Benin Bronzes. To further facilitate such processes, an international network of experts will advise German museums on restitution procedures. The revision of the joint guide for the return of Nazi-looted art, starting December 1, will also provide clarity and aid in arbitration.

With the establishment of this central point of contact, Germany is taking a significant step towards righting the wrongs of the colonial era. The return of cultural goods and human remains is not just a matter of justice, but also of healing historical wounds and fostering international understanding.
