Germany dispenses additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine
In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's air defence capabilities, Germany has announced plans to deliver additional Patriot launchers in the coming days. This decision comes as part of a broader international effort to support Ukraine in the face of the ongoing conflict.
The German Armed Forces will deliver these systems through a cooperative agreement between Germany and the United States. The US manufacturer will, in turn, deliver new Patriot systems to Germany as soon as possible, in recognition of Germany's support to Ukraine.
Germany will be the first country to receive newly produced Patriot systems from the USA under this agreement. The delivery of these systems is financed by Germany, and the new Patriot systems will be of the latest generation.
The initial agreement for five Patriot systems was finalized in July 2025 during talks between Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington. Following this, Germany committed to delivering two additional Patriot systems under a new US-Germany agreement.
The immediate delivery will involve sending two Patriot launchers from early August 2025, with additional system components expected to arrive within two to three months thereafter. This phased delivery indicates that initial units will be deployed soon, followed by further components in the near to mid-term future.
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that Germany has committed to supporting Ukraine with further Patriot systems on the NATO level. The new Patriot systems will be prepared and handed over ready for deployment in Ukraine through "joint efforts of partners".
The delivery of these systems is a part of Germany's commitment to meet its NATO commitments. The aim is to strengthen Ukraine's air defence by adding additional Patriot batteries. The systems will be used to enhance Ukraine's air defence capabilities, contributing to the overall stability of the region.
