New Cold Front Expected - Snow Overnight - Germany Braces for Freezing Cold Front After Storm Elli’s Exit

A fresh cold front is set to sweep across Germany after storm Elli departs. The shift will bring freezing temperatures, strong winds, and snowfall to many regions. Forecasters warn of hazardous conditions, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas.

Storm Elli will move away during Friday, but its exit will not bring relief. By Friday morning, gusts of 60 km/h are expected in Lower and Central Franconia, Swabia, and Upper Bavaria. The strongest winds—up to 100 km/h—will hit the southwestern Alpine peaks.

As the cold front advances, temperatures will plummet. The snow line will drop to lower altitudes by Friday night into Saturday. Upland regions in the central mountain ranges and the Alps could see 10 to 15 centimetres of snow. Even valleys and low-lying areas may receive 1 to 5 centimetres. Icy roads are likely due to the combination of snow and freezing conditions. The German Weather Service has not named the incoming cold front, as only the previous storm system, Elli, carried an official designation.

The weather change will affect travel and outdoor activities across much of the country. Snow, wind, and sub-zero temperatures are expected to persist into the weekend. Authorities advise caution on roads and in exposed areas.
