Ice Storm Warning in All of MV - School Buses to Run - Germany braces for black ice chaos as freezing rain sweeps Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
Germany’s Meteorological Service has issued an expanded severe weather warning for black ice across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The alert covers the entire state, with different start times for western and eastern regions. Overnight rain is expected to freeze on contact with frozen ground, creating dangerous travel conditions by Tuesday morning.
The warning begins at 8:00 PM on Monday for the western part of the state, lasting until 8:00 AM Tuesday. In the east, it takes effect later, from 11:00 PM Monday until 10:00 AM Tuesday. A band of rain moving across the northeast could freeze instantly, turning roads and pavements into ice rinks.
In Neubrandenburg, freezing rain is forecast overnight, prompting city officials to focus on clearing key routes before Tuesday’s morning rush hour starts at 5:00 AM. School bus services remain operational as of Monday evening, though some routes may face delays or cancellations if conditions worsen. Local authorities have confirmed adequate salt supplies to tackle the threat. Schwerin officials reported stockpiles of 200 metric tons, with another 150 tons due by Wednesday. The Vorpommern-Greifswald district holds reserves exceeding 50,000 tons across the region, enough to cover over 600 kilometres of roads. As of 7:00 PM, police had recorded no ice-related accidents in the state. Authorities continue to warn of sudden freezing rain or flash freezing on wet surfaces. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution during the warning period.
The severe weather warning remains in place until Tuesday morning, with freezing conditions expected to ease later in the day. Local crews are prepared with de-icing supplies, but road users should stay alert for possible disruptions. Updates on school transport and road conditions will be provided as the situation develops.
