ADAC warns of increasing traffic in city centers during the second Advent weekend - Germany braces for Advent weekend traffic chaos amid Christmas market rush
Germany's ADAC motoring association has issued a warning about heavy traffic during the second Advent weekend. The surge in visitors to Christmas markets is set to cause delays, particularly in city centres and on major highways. Drivers are being advised to plan ahead as congestion builds from Friday afternoon onwards.
The busiest times on the roads will be Friday between 1 and 6 p.m., with further delays expected on Saturday and Sunday during late mornings and afternoons. Cities like Cologne and Munich, known for their large Christmas markets, are likely to see the worst inner-city congestion. The A1 (Köln-Lübeck), A2 (Oberhausen-Hannover), and A3 (Linz-Oberhausen) highways will also face heavy traffic, especially along north-south and east-west routes.
The combination of Christmas market visitors, roadworks, and possible winter weather will test road networks across Germany and Austria. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel, particularly when heading into busy urban areas or crossing borders. Park & Ride options remain the best way to avoid the worst of the inner-city gridlock.
