"Airlift Operations in the Middle East Crisis" The Luftwaffe's Diplomatic Evacuation of 64 Germans from Israel
Germany-bound Airlift Conducted by Luftwaffe, Escorting 64 Citizens from Israel
In the heat of the Middle East conflict, the German air force, known colloquially as the Luftwaffe, stepped in to rescue 64 German citizens residing in Israel. On June 20, 2025, two Airbus A400M military transport planes whisked these German nationals out of harm's way, marking a swift and decisive diplomatic intervention.
This operation, referred to as a "diplomatic evacuation" or "diplomatic pick-up," was a carefully orchestrated undertaking that prioritized the safety of vulnerable individuals, such as families with children. This action was a direct response to the escalating tensions and missile exchanges between Iran and Israel, ensuring these German citizens could safely depart the conflict zone.
Importantly, this diplomatic mission was not classified as a military evacuation, sparing the necessity of complying with the stringent parliamentary approval requirements that would apply to such an operation. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius later commended the Luftwaffe teams for their swift and effective deployment in executing this time-sensitive mission.
During the preceding days, Germany's Foreign Office had already facilitated the return of 345 people from the region via Jordan, with a further flight planned to depart from Amman's capital. However, securing transportation to Jordan presented a significant challenge for some individuals. Those who were unable to self-organize their journey to Amman received a lifeline, with the Luftwaffe extending its services to evacuate them directly from Israel.
Despite the presence of a small number of Germans living in Iran, the Luftwaffe did not offer similar airlift services to individuals amidst that country's political unrest. The evacuation efforts were confined to Israeli borders, where close coordination with Israeli authorities made the operation possible.
This diplomatic intervention underscores Germany's commitment to safeguarding its citizens during regional crises while strictly adhering to domestic legal frameworks that precisely differentiate military and diplomatic actions. Germany continues to demonstrate its solidarity and proactive role in securing the well-being of its nationals amidst global unrest.

The Commission, amidst the turbulent Middle East Conflict, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, given the politics and general news surrounding the use of missiles and nuclear threats in the region. The diplomatic evacuation of Germans from Israel by the Luftwaffe, under the watchful eye of the Ministry of Defence and the Federal Foreign Office, demonstrates Germany's commitment to safeguarding its citizens while adhering to domestic legal frameworks.
