Egg-tensive Trade: USA's Demand for Eggs Sparks International Calls, Including Germany

Germany being solicited for egg shipments by the United States

In the midst of a nationwide egg scarcity, the U.S. is scouting for overseas supplies to alleviate the shortage. With the Trump administration embroiled in trade squabbles, they're relying on global markets to secure the precious commodity. There's even a rumor of help coming from Germany.

Reports suggest that the U.S. has tossed a lifeline to Germany for additional egg exports. A spokesperson from the German Egg Association has confirmed the development but kept mum on the finer details.

The U.S. decision comes shortly after outbreaks of bird flu left hens penniless and egg prices soaring. Last week, there were reports of U.S. authorities approaching other European countries for more egg exports. As per media reports, these requests found their way to industry associations in Denmark and Sweden, among others. However, the current state of these requests remains unclear as the U.S. government hasn'tEndorsed theті.

Earlier, Hans-Peter Goldnick, head of the German Egg Association, mentioned that few eggs are traded to the U.S. via the spot market, but the volume is negligible. Germany too can't boast a surplus of eggs; it only manages to churn out enough to cover 73% of the country's demand in 2023, with the rest being imported. The Danish Egg Association mentioned that they're examining the U.S. request, but there's no European surplus to speak of. "There's a worldwide dearth of eggs because consumption is growing, and many are hit by bird flu," a spokesperson stated.

The egg shortage in the U.S. and the spike in prices are primarily the outcome of the recent bird flu outbreak. The H5N1 virus is wreaking havoc among wild birds globally, triggering outbreaks in U.S. poultry and dairy farms. To curb the epidemic, numerous laying hens have been axed. In response, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has pledged $100 million for the research of bird flu vaccines.
