Germany: Autumn Roads Bring Higher Risks as Harvest Season Begins

As the clocks go back this weekend and the days grow shorter, drivers in Germany are being warned of increased risks on the roads. The shift to standard time coincides with harvesting season, leading to more wildlife on the move during rush hour and poor road conditions due to dirt and debris.

The darker evenings mean that animals are more active during the evening commute, increasing the likelihood of collisions. This is compounded by the ongoing harvesting of corn and beet fields, which drives animals onto the roads. Drivers are urged to adapt their driving style to these conditions. This includes checking vehicle lights, ensuring windshield wipers are in good condition, and filling the washer fluid reservoir.

The sugar beet harvest is also causing dirt to be brought onto the roads, further increasing the risk for drivers. October brings unpleasant weather conditions, including wet roads, fallen leaves, and sludge, making driving slippery and hazardous. Police are advising motorists to be vigilant and adjust their speed accordingly. To stay safe during these autumn months, it is recommended to switch to winter tires from October to Easter. Winter tires provide significantly better grip and safety at temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius, on wet roads, and in conditions like frost, ice, or the first snowfalls typical of this season.

With the clocks going back and harvest season in full swing, drivers in Germany face increased risks on the roads. From wildlife collisions to poor road conditions, motorists are urged to adapt their driving style, maintain their vehicles, and consider switching to winter tires to ensure safety during these autumn months.
