Germany appoints Markus Potzel as its ambassador to Switzerland

Markus Potzel, a seasoned diplomat with experience in Singapore, Tehran, and as Personal Advisor to the then German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has taken up his new ambassadorial post in Bern, Switzerland.

Potzel's appointment, announced by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bern, comes on September 18, 2025. The diplomat, who has also served as Deputy Special Political Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), previously represented Germany in Iran and Afghanistan.

Potzel's credentials were presented to President Karin Keller-Sutter on Thursday, September 17, 2025. In his statement, Potzel emphasized the close partnership and friendship between Germany and Switzerland, working together for a secure and liveable future in a rules-based world.

Before his new appointment, Potzel headed the crisis unit at the Federal Foreign Office and served as Special Representative of the Federal Government for Afghanistan and Pakistan, accompanying the Doha peace negotiations in this role.
