Germany and Colombia have decided to deepen their relationship in migration matters. The primary objectives include fostering skilled worker immigration and stemming the tide of unauthorized migration, as shown in a declaration signed by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Colombian Foreign Minister Laura Camilla Sarabia Torres on April 2025. According to the Interior Ministry, there will be a focus on migration for training, studying, and employment opportunities in the near future. Additionally, both countries have expressed a desire to collaborate in combating unauthorized migration.

In the past few years, the number of rejected asylum applications from Colombian nationals in Germany has grown substantially, according to the Interior Ministry. Currently, Colombia ranks eighth among countries of origin in Germany, with an acceptance rate of roughly 0.3%. Thus, both nations agreed on a migration policy collaboration as early as February 2024. During the first quarter of 2025, the number of asylum applications from Colombia dropped by 42% compared to the previous year, according to reports.

"Colombia is a valuable ally for us – not only in the battle against organized crime and drug trafficking, but also in curbing unauthorized migration," noted Minister Faeser. "At the same time, Colombia boasts a large pool of young workers eager to work in Germany." The German government aims to provide young Colombians with quality education in Germany.
