Germans disapprove of electing CDU party's candidate as chancellor, according to poll results

In a recent survey conducted by the Kantar/Emnid institute on June 24, 2020, the preferences of German voters for potential chancellor candidates have come to light. The poll, commissioned by the Funke media group, provides insights into the current political landscape.

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) currently leads slightly in voter support, with around 26% of Germans considering them a suitable choice for chancellor. This is narrowly ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) alliance, which garnered about 24-28% support.

The survey results suggest that Chancellor Friedrich Merz from the CDU is facing growing discontent, with approximately 67% of Germans expressing dissatisfaction with his performance after his first 100 days in office. In contrast, the AfD, led by Alice Weidel, has overtaken the CDU in some polls and is currently the most popular party, potentially making Weidel a leading chancellor candidate in voters’ eyes.

Within the CDU/CSU, several candidates are vying for the chancellor position. Armin Laschet, the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister President, enjoys the support of 19% of Germans, while Health Minister Jens Spahn scores 27%. However, both Spahn and Laschet, as well as Norbert Röttgen, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Bundestag, receive negative values within the Union camp.

Interestingly, Spahn's approval among the Greens is higher than among Union supporters, although the exact percentage is not given. Laschet achieves his best result among FDP supporters, while Merkel finds more support among Green and FDP supporters than within her own camp.

Markus Söder, the Bavarian Minister President and CSU chairman, performs particularly well, with 69% of Union supporters trusting him to successfully run for chancellor. Söder enjoys 45% approval as a chancellor candidate for the Union, but 36% of Germans consider him an unsuitable candidate.

Angela Merkel, the current Federal Chancellor, receives 54% approval as a suitable chancellor candidate for the Union. However, she faces rejection from 42% of Union voters. The approval of Norbert Röttgen and the approval of Markus Söder as chancellor candidates for the Union among FDP supporters are not specified in the given data.
