German Women's National Team Lineup Announced for Euro Championships
In an exciting turn of events for German football, coach Christian Wück has unveiled his 23-player squad for the 2023 European Championship, taking place in Switzerland from July 2 to July 27. This legion of talent marks Wück's first major tournament since he stepped into the hot seat last summer.
Some familiar faces from the 2022 tournament that saw Germany finish a close second to the England host nation make the cut, with captain Giulia Gwinn and Lea Schüller, Sara Däbritz, and Kathrin Hendrich among them. Additionally, up-and-coming star Cora Zicai from Freiburg also earns a spot.
In a bold move aimed at overcoming the challenges that lay ahead during the tournament month, Wück described the squad as well-balanced, capable of sourcing innovative solutions on the field. He expressed his vision for a team radiating joy, enthusiasm, determination, and conviction, emphasizing that embodying these qualities could propel them to impressive heights. Moreover, Wück shared a boost in the team's self-confidence after some recent victories in the Nations League, albeit he refrained from setting a specific goal for his charges.
As anticipated, defender Felicitas Rauch, Eintracht Frankfurt striker Nicole Anyomi, and Bayern Munich star Lena Oberdorf were all left out. The exclusion of the trio follows some controversy surrounding a perceived lack of communication with the national team coach by omitted players. Regrettably, Oberdorf remains sidelined due to a cruciate ligament injury sustained last July.
Germany, boasting a record eight European Championship titles, have been drawn in Group C alongside Poland, Denmark, and Sweden. They kick off their campaign against Poland in St. Gallen on July 4.
