"German theaters welcome a film centering on renowned Christian philosopher Leibniz"
In the heart of Germany, a new film is set to premiere, delving into the captivating life of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The film, titled "Leibniz - Chronicle of a Lost Painting," premieres on the 18th of September across Germany.
The film, directed by Edgar Reitz, begins with Sophie of Hanover commissioning a portrait of Leibniz. Leibniz, born and raised in Leipzig, spent his entire career at the court of the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg in Hanover, starting his work there in 1676 and remaining until his death.
Leibniz was a significant figure in the Christian philosophical and intellectual circles of his time. Known as a Christian philosopher and polymath, as well as a pioneer of the Enlightenment, Leibniz's life and works have been the subject of much intrigue and debate.
The film reveals the numerous facets of Leibniz, featuring an exchange between scholars and artists, and a passionate debate on truth in image and representation, reality, and art. Edgar Selge plays the role of Leibniz, with Lars Eidinger, Barbara Sukowa, and Aenne Schwarz in the lead roles.
The initiative for this film was started by the Hanover city council in 2008. According to a German newspaper report, the council approached Reitz to dedicate several rooms in the rebuilt city palace to Leibniz. However, the project, initially composed of ten short films, eventually became unfinanceable.
Despite not having a family, Leibniz never married and had no children. His work, however, continues to impact the world, making him a truly remarkable figure in history.
Reitz wrote scenes for ten different short films, each focusing on a different aspect of Leibniz's life. The new film is based on the initial project that Reitz had written, offering a unique and immersive look into the life of this enigmatic figure.
Prepare to embark on a journey through time as "Leibniz - Chronicle of a Lost Painting" brings to life the story of one of history's most fascinating minds.
