German squad succumbed significantly in the game.

In the German semifinals of the Maschinensucher EHF European League Finals, SG Flensburg-Handewitt emerged triumphant against MT Melsungen, securing a spot in the final awaiting them on Sunday. The North Germans overcame Melsungen 35:34 in overtime, with the deciding goal scored in the ultimate moments of the match. This win sets Flensburg on course to defend their title, having edged out their French opponents Montpellier HB in a thrilling encounter.

Montpellier HB clinched their victory over THW Kiel 32:31, thus preventing a North German derby in the final. Kiel's performance was fraught with difficulties, as they struggled to find their footing and trailed for much of the game. Renowned coach Alfred Gislason's team played catch-up, only managing to take their first lead with just minutes remaining in the first half. The second half was an open exchange, but Montpellier held their ground and snatched victory at the last possible moment.

By eliminating Kiel, Montpellier booked their place in the final representing France, making them the sole non-German team among the Final Four, which also included Flensburg, Melsungen, and Kiel. This semifinal encounter was a replay of a significant meeting between the two sides, further highlighting their intense rivalry on the European handball stage.

Flensburg are now one victory away from securing their third win in the "small European Cup." Since 2015, only one German team has failed to claim the title, when Benfica Lissabon achieved a shock upset in 2022. Conversely, Melsungen's dream of ending their title drought was dashed, as they must settle for continuesBundesliga competitions, where they currently share second position with Füchse Berlin.
