German soldiers under suspicion of extremism implicated in a terror raid investigation
In a significant development, eight individuals, including two active and two former German military soldiers, a federal police officer, and unspecified others, have been arrested in a series of raids against an alleged far-right group. The arrests were confirmed by the General Prosecutor's Office in Celle upon request.
The raids, which took place in 14 locations across Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia, were led by the Central Office for Combating Terrorism of the General Prosecutor's Office in Celle, in cooperation with the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office. The ongoing investigations focus on the evaluation of electronic data carriers and detailed weapons law assessments.
Four of the suspects are also suspected of possessing illegal military weapons and other fully automatic firearms. During the raids, several live short and long firearms were seized, although no weapons subject to the War Weapons Control Act were found among those seized. A pistol and ammunition were previously seized by the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office from one of the suspects at the end of April.
The investigations are linked to previous investigations into the suspected right-wing extremist group "Nordbund." However, further questions regarding the connection among the suspects remain unanswered.
The eight suspects, aged 32 to 57, are suspected of forming and participating in an armed group based on an alleged far-right ideology. Authorities seized weapons, ammunition, Nazi propaganda materials, and discovered that some, like Gottfried Küssel, are central figures organizing gatherings and owning properties linked to the group. They face charges related to violations of the Prohibition Act against right-wing extremist activities.
The arrests and raids serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat extremism and maintain peace in Germany. The investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
