FC Schalke 04 Secures Miron Muslic as New Coach Amidst Plymouth Argyle's Frustration

Gelsenkirchen-based football club FC Schalke 04 has officially announced the signing of Miron Muslic as their new coach. The 42-year-old, who previously coached Plymouth Argyle in the English second division, has agreed to a contract running until June 30, 2027.

Schalke pulled a release clause in Muslic's contract, reportedly paying a substantial fee, including a mid-six-figure sum and bonuses, though the exact details have remained undisclosed.

In a statement from the Gelsenkirchen-based club, Muslic expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by Schalke's decision-makers. He claimed he had candid conversations about the club's expectations and his potential contributions.

Born in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1982, Muslic began his coaching career in Austria following his playing years. Inspired by the long-time coach of Schalke's arch-rivals, Borussia Dortmund, Jürgen Klopp, Muslic aspires to promote active and intense football at Schalke. However, his primary objective is to stabilize the club for future growth in the long term.

Frank Baumann, who will start his tenure as Schalke's sports director on Sunday, praised Muslic, highlighting his professional and communicative competence, inspirational attributes, and recognizable style on and off the pitch.

Schalke's appointment of Muslic marks another attempt at stability following a disastrous 2024/25 season. After parting ways with Domenico Tedesco in 2019, the club has seen twelve different coaches, with three of them serving twice as interim appointments. Mirko Slomka was the last coach to serve at least two years from January 2006 to April 2008.

The sudden departure of Muslic has left Plymouth Argyle frustrated. The English club criticized deliberations with a second-tier Bundesliga club without fully explaining their concerns. Muslic expressed gratitude towards Plymouth for granting him the opportunity to discuss the move with FC Schalke 04.
