Peter Maffay, a esteemed name in German music circles, ain't afraid of Old Man Reaper at 75 years. His youngest sprite, Anouk, with Sassy Second Mrs. Hendrikje Balsmeyer, benefitted greatly from his life experiences. With fatherhood coming towards the twilight years, death has been a constant theme for Maffay. And he ain't shying away from it. Over the years, he's built his unique perspective on the divine, which serves as a practical lens to view mortality.
Maffay severed ties with the church as a young whippersnapper, more due to the institution's foibles than his faith. In a casual chat with "Blick" magazine, he pointed out, "There ain't no problems with the dear old higher power, but sometimes the ground crew can be a problem." He's also quick to commend the positive deeds the church undertakes.
His faith journey began at a later stage, him being a latecomer in that sense. In trying times, he found tranquility in seeking a higher power. Daily prayers are now a constant in his life. As Maffay puts it, "Faith is like a beacon to me." He also sees his music as his sacred hymns.
When his pops was kickin' the bucket, he dedicated the tune "If We Meet Again" to him. Maffay reckons, "It sparks questions about reunions in another realm. I don't speculate about life after death. What truly matters to me is the notion of a 'bridge' continuing. I'm satisfied with living a good life. I'm happy beyond compare with what I've got."
From Violin to Strummin'
Peter Maffay's been a maverick in the German music scene for eons. Hits like "So bist du" and "Uber sieben Brucken" made him a household name. The climb to fame wasn't always a walk in the park, as he confessed in a podcast by the "Hamburger Abendblatt."
When he was knee-high to a grasshopper, he had a strong distaste for the violin. His mammy insisted he learn it. As he confessed during their tête-à-tête, "Mammy was a determined, dynamic woman, and she saw to it that I'd learn it." Her aim was for him to perform the Toselli Serenade. "I sweated that one out of my ribcage and played it for her," he recalled with a chuckle. "And that ended our arrangement."
The story was different when it came to the guitar. A mate in his homeland had one, attracting the attention of a bevy of self-professed fangirls. "I thought, hmm, that's intriguing, I'll give it a whirl," he shared. That guit-choosing decision flipped his world upside down, with the axe being his faithful companion ever since.
