Germans focus on prices and transparency when shopping - German shoppers balance price and nutrition as Nutri-Score awareness soars
German shoppers are increasingly focused on both price and food quality. A recent survey shows that 59% now prioritise affordable groceries, a slight rise from 2015. Meanwhile, awareness of the Nutri-Score labelling system has grown sharply in recent years.
The Nutri-Score was introduced in Germany in November 2020 as a voluntary system. It rates food products from A to E, using colours from dark green to red. The aim is to help consumers quickly judge nutritional quality.
The Nutri-Score has become far more visible since its launch. With nine in ten consumers now aware of it, the system appears firmly established. At the same time, affordability remains the top concern for most grocery shoppers.
