German Industrial Slump: 5th Consecutive Month of Production Decrease
In a surprising turn of events, German industries have witnessed a decrease in production output for the fifth month in a row. This downward trend began in the spring of 2023 and continued, with companies producing 0.4% less in October than in the previous month. The Federal Statistical Office announced this information on Thursday, contradicting economists' expectations of an increase by 0.2%.
"The industrial production downturn since spring 2023 shows no signs of abating," the Federal Ministry of Economics explained. The drop in production output can be partially attributed to special effects such as bridge and vacation days. However, even without these factors, the economic situation remains weak, leaving economists uncertain about a rapid recovery. Commerzbank's chief economist, Jörg Krämer, predicts continued decline in the coming months as companies address a slump in incoming orders after the coronavirus pandemic.
Exploring the Root Causes
The automotive industry has been a significant contributor to Germany's industrial decline, with output dropping by 10% in December 2024. Machine maintenance and assembly also saw a significant decline, with a 10.5% drop in December 2024. Energy-intensive industrial branches have also experienced a 3.1% output decrease in December 2024.
Global economic factors such as soaring energy prices, weak external demand, and a decline in competitiveness are also having an impact on German industries. The country faces deep-rooted structural challenges, including a labor shortage, excessive bureaucracy, and weak investment in both the private and public sectors. Trade policies and uncertainties surrounding Germany's upcoming snap election are further contributing to the economic downturn.
Consumer sentiment and private consumption have been stagnant since mid-2024. High food and energy prices, and concerns about job security, have led to a meager 0.3% growth in private consumption in 2024.
