German Politician, Annalena Baerbock, Elected as President of the United Nations General Assembly

New York (dpa) - In a landslide victory, former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has claimed the prestigious position of President of the UN General Assembly, receiving 167 votes in a secret ballot. Fourteen members abstained, while seven countries voted for the original German candidate, Helga Schmid.

This historic election of the 44-year-old Green politician marks the fifth time a woman has held the post. In her acceptance speech, Baerbock vowed to serve as an "honest mediator" and unifying force, while acknowledging the daunting global crises that lie ahead.

UN's Second-Tier Top Job

As President, Baerbock will guide the General Assembly sessions and manage its agenda. Though her role doesn't carry the same weight as the UN Secretary-General, she may exert influence behind the scenes. For instance, she could help shape the election of the next Secretary-General next year, with her direct line to foreign ministers worldwide.

The UN Security Council, with its five veto powers, holds more power and can issue legally binding resolutions, unlike the General Assembly's decisions, which often carry more symbolic value.

Germany's United Nations Push

Germany's appointment to this position is part of a larger foreign policy strategy. While the U.S. retreats from the multilateral system, Germany aims to increase its international standing. The country has applied for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the years 2027 and 2028. Germany also advocates for the expansion of the UN's Bonn location, should UN agencies need to relocate due to financial constraints.

Contested Election

The election was not without controversy. Moscow, which had initially accepted Helga Schmid for the position, requested a secret ballot, disrupting usual practices. In a formal vote, Baerbock emerged victorious. While Russia criticized Baerbock for what they perceived as bias, her hardline stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine undoubtedly played a role.

Pivotal Challenges Ahead

Baerbock steps into her role at a critical juncture. The UN faces immense political and financial pressure, having endured significant cuts during the Trump era. Baerbock pledges to champion reforms, advocating for the UN's sustainable development goals, gender equality, and combating the climate crisis. Her role in New York may serve as a stepping stone towards an expanded international career, given her education in international law.
