The rugged terrain of Crete's Mount Gigilos, neighboring the popular Samaria Gorge, proved fatal for a 20-year-old German adventurer. After a grueling month-long hunt, his lifeless body was uncovered.

A band of seasoned local hikers came across the German tourist's remains, matching him to photos and clothing, as revealed by Greek news outlet ERTNews. An autopsy will now be carried out in Chania to ascertain the cause of death. The search party had discontinued its operations a few days prior, as mentioned in the report.

The hikers had braved the harsh winter conditions of Mount Gigilos' approximately 2000-meter summit, only to discover the young man's remains early the next morning in the secluded Mitato of Tzatzimos region. He had embarked on a hike in the Samaria Gorge on February 13 and vanished without a trace.

His sister received a message from him saying all was well, and then the trail went cold. The search in the inaccessible area was arduous from the start. Fog banks obstructed visibility, and periods of hail and snow made the ordeal even more challenging. Helicopters and drones could scarcely be utilized due to the adverse weather, and rescue teams consequently had to search on foot with sought-after search dogs and the aid of dedicated volunteers.

The family of the missing man funded additional rescue teams through donations, but the search did not produce any results and had to be temporarily halted due to inclement weather on March 2.

Scaling Mount Gigilos is considered an arduous task even for seasoned trekking experts. The upper portion of the mountain is rocky and riddled with deep crevices. The mountain is typically ascended by experienced groups during the summer months, accompanied by professional guides. In the winter months, access to the gorge is usually prohibited due to the risks posed by heavy rain, snow, and fog, which might trigger flooding, landslides, and rockfalls.
