In the heart of the German Parliament, the Bundestag, the spotlight is on a long-awaited review of the nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Health politician Dagmar Schmidt from the SPD party has acknowledged that the pandemic was "the toughest test many of us have faced" and it's high time for an honest, factual, and empathetic assessment, including a scrutiny of mistakes and the loss of trust during those challenging times.

The pandemic was an unexpected disaster for the country, according to CDU representative Hendrik Hoppenstedt. As we learn from the past to avoid repeating errors in the future, it's crucial that Germany never finds itself unprepared once more.

The discussions led to the coalition of Union and SPD establishing an inquiry commission in line with their coalition agreement. They emphasized that the pandemic significantly impacted the lives of citizens, creating a massive challenge for civil society, state institutions, businesses, arts, and culture.

The inquiry, aptly titled "Review of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Lessons for Future Pandemics," will strive to deliver a clear and comprehensive overview of the pandemic's origins, developments, and aftermath, as well as the government's measures taken in response. It will also endeavor to draw valuable insights from any identified misjudgments to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

The commission will call attention to "failures and insufficiently considered impacts on society and the economy, on health and personal development opportunities, especially for children and young people," aiming to equip the nation to better respond to future pandemics and ensure quick and clear communication of goals.

The AFD's Stephan Brandner endorsed the Bundestag's initiative to review the COVID-19 policy, but he expressed disappointment over the coalition's proposed inquiry as mere "self-forgiveness." Brandner highlighted the necessity for legal consequences for any mistakes and called for investigations by public prosecutors, convictions by courts, and accountability for unconstitutional and inhumane measures enacted during the pandemic.

Coronavirus Inquiry Commissions in the Bundestag are typically held to prepare for decisions on crucial topics and are composed of 14 parliamentary members and an equal number of experts from scientific, societal, and sector-specific institutions.
