Parliament (Bundestag) nomination for Vice President role: AfD chooses Gerold Otten as candidate - German Parliament (Bundestag): AfD Proposes Gerold Otten for Vice-Presidential Post

Mark your calendars, folks! In a little over a month, the brand-new Bundestag will assemble for its kickoff meeting, set for Tuesday. The agenda includes the Big Kahuna: electing the leadership. The Union gang is eyeing CDU's Julia Klöckner as their top choice for the Presidential chair. Once appointed, she'll be casting her votes to select her deputies.

The Protocol calls for at least one representative from each faction to bag a deputy post. The AfD, stepping onto the Bundestag scene back in 2017, has repeatedly thrown its hat into the ring, but no luck so far. In this new Bundestag, they're gunning for the second-strongest force. However, the other parties seem hell-bent on sticking to their established paths.

Stepping into the limelight is Gerold Otten, born and bred in Lower Saxony, and once an officer in the Luftwaffe. He's been serving as a Bundestag member since 2017, winning re-election via the state list in Bavaria. In the outgoing Bundestag, the 69-year-old demonstrated his prowess on the Defense Committee, tackling tricky topics like disarmament and arms control. Additionally, he served as a deputy member on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The Tagesspiegel and AFP news outlets have reported that Gerold Otten, a CDU member of the Bundestag from Lower Saxony, is being considered a frontrunner for a deputy position in the upcoming Bundestag session. This is due to the Mainstream Parties' seemingly united stand against the AfD's persistent bid for a vice president role, which has fallen short once again. In previous sessions, Otten displayed his expertise in defense-related matters, serving on the Defense Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.
