In a significant development, Jens Spahn, leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has called for restraint in the debate over a potential deployment of German troops to Ukraine following a peace agreement. Spahn's appeal comes as Germany considers its contribution to necessary security guarantees, with the potential peace treaty encompassing the future security order of Europe.

According to reports, Spahn's letter to parliamentarians, obtained by the German Press Agency in Berlin, emphasises that the question of whether security guarantees would mean direct deployment of German soldiers to Ukraine is not straightforward at this point in time.

The focus, instead, appears to be on substantial financial aid and political support. Germany has pledged to allocate approximately 9 billion euros (around $10.5 billion) in aid to Ukraine through 2026, with the aim of supporting a strong and modern Ukrainian military capable of defense and deterrence.

Dirk Wiese, parliamentary business manager of the SPD faction, echoes Spahn's sentiments, calling for restraint in the debate. Wiese, too, stresses the importance of the defense capability of Ukraine, but indicates that the question of a possible involvement of the Bundeswehr (German military) does not currently arise.

The future security order of Europe, it seems, will be primarily carried by the Europeans, working in coordination and with the support of the USA. Germany, as a part of multilateral agreements, will play an important and reliable role in this order.

The "Welt" was the first to report on the contents of Spahn's letter, highlighting the cautious political calculations and ongoing debates within Germany on the extent of military guarantees. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how Germany will continue to shape the security landscape in Europe.
