German official Kretschmer denies involvement of German soldiers in Ukraine

Michael Kretschmer, the CDU deputy leader and Saxony's Premier, has ruled out the deployment of German troops in Ukraine, emphasising that Germany currently lacks the military capacity to take on such a role and cannot guarantee Ukraine's security alone. [1][3]

The prerequisites for deploying German troops in Ukraine include a peace agreement or ceasefire, reliable security guarantees from allies, particularly the United States, consultations and agreement within the German coalition government and European partners, and considerations of historical sensitivities and domestic political opposition. [1]

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has spoken about the possibility of discussing German participation in Ukraine's security after a peace agreement, but it remains a hypothetical and contentious issue requiring parliamentary approval and broad consensus. [2][3]

Meanwhile, the United States is ready to support its allies, including from the air, in securing Ukraine's peace. However, President Donald Trump has remained vague about the details of these security guarantees. [4]

These security guarantees are considered a prerequisite for Ukraine to make concessions to Russia in negotiations. The attack on Ukraine and the peace talks with Russia are ongoing. [5]

Interestingly, Trump has suggested that Germany, France, and Britain are prepared to send soldiers to Ukraine to secure a possible peace. [6] However, Kretschmer has stated that Germany should only act as strong as it is. [7]

In a recent development, ten countries are reportedly ready to send troops to Ukraine after the Ukraine summit in Washington. [8] The focus is on reliable security guarantees for Kyiv in the event of a possible peace agreement. [9]
