German films produced in collaboration with filmmakers achieved prominent victories in the 78th Locarno Film Festival, with homegrown productions claiming the top honor, the Golden Leopard.

At the 78th Locarno International Film Festival, several films received notable accolades, solidifying its reputation as one of Europe's most prestigious cinematic events, alongside Berlin, Cannes, and Venice.

The top prize, the Pardo d'Oro (Golden Leopard), was awarded to "Tabi to Hibi" (Two Seasons, Two Strangers) directed by Sho Miyake, a Japanese film [1][2][3]. This heartfelt feature film tells a poignant story that resonated with the jury and festival-goers alike.

Other key awards include:

  • Special Jury Prize: "White Snail" by Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter [2][3]. This Austrian-German co-production, which won big at the festival, tells a compelling story that captivated the jury.
  • Best Director: Abbas Fahdel was honoured for his documentary "Tales of the Wounded Land" [2][3]. This powerful film offers a poignant exploration of Iraq's history and its people.
  • Best Performance: Awards were given to Marya Imbro and Mikhail Senkov for "White Snail", and Manuela Martelli and Ana Marija Veselčić for "God Will Not Help" [2][5]. Both films showcased exceptional performances that left a lasting impression on the audience.
  • Piazza Grande Prix du public: "Rosemead" by Eric Lin [2] was the crowd favourite, winning the hearts of festival attendees.
  • Concorso Cineasti del Presente Awards: The Golden Leopard – Filmmakers of the Present was awarded to "Hair, Paper, Water" by Nicolas Graux and Minh Quý Trương [2]. This film, which competed in the Cineasti del Presente section, impressed the jury with its unique storytelling.

Outside of competition, the festival also honoured US actor and director Lucy Liu with a Career Achievement Award [4].

In addition, the German-Georgian co-production "Dry Leaf" by Alexandre Koberidze received a special mention at the Locarno International Film Festival. This film, which won the FIPRESCI award from the international film critics jury, showcases a compelling narrative that deserves recognition.
