German Minister Jens Spahn upholds ban on weapon sales to Israel
In a video message, Union faction leader Jens Spahn expressed his support for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's decision to suspend German arms exports to Israel amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The suspension is a temporary measure aimed at avoiding any potential contribution to civilian casualties in Gaza, as a result of the planned expansion of Israeli military operations in the region.
Spahn emphasised that the existence and security of Israel remains a German national interest, and Germany continues to stand firmly on the side of Israel. However, he also stressed the importance of improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza before resuming arms exports.
The Union faction is currently facing a debate on arms exports to Israel, with some members criticising Merz for not consulting with the party and faction beforehand. In response, Merz stated that this does not mean a change in German policy regarding Israel.
Spahn's message aimed to give a new impetus for a peaceful development in the Middle East. He reiterated Germany's support for Israel, stating that Germany stands firmly on the side of Israel, but also emphasised the need for a balanced approach that takes into account the humanitarian concerns caused by the conflict escalation.
The German government carefully considered the situation before pausing arms deliveries that could be used in Gaza, with the aim of avoiding any potential contribution to civilian casualties. Despite internal party criticism, Spahn maintains that German-Israeli relations should remain strong, and this pause does not alter Germany’s fundamental policy toward Israel.
