German military supplies two additional Patriot defense systems to Ukraine - German military providing additional two Patriot defense systems to Ukraine.
In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, Germany and the United States have agreed to deliver a total of five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, as announced by Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in July 2025.
The decision, made during a Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting, comes in response to Russia's intensified use of long-range ballistic missiles and drone strikes against Ukraine. The Patriot system, a mobile air defense system with a range of approximately 68 kilometers, is uniquely capable of intercepting such threats.
The first U.S.-made Patriot systems were delivered to Ukraine in April 2023 from Germany, comprising three batteries and a number of interceptors. These systems have been actively used in defense since their deployment.
The U.S. President, Donald Trump, publicly confirmed the plan to send additional Patriot batteries, with some financing coming from several European nations. Some of these batteries will be transferred from existing European stockpiles and replenished by new American production.
NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, has also emphasized ongoing efforts to expedite the transfer of Patriot systems and additional capabilities to Ukraine from Europe. The priority is on rapid delivery from existing assets over production-dependent sources.
The German government is linking its Patriot delivery to Ukraine with an appeal for partners to provide additional systems in a timely manner. The German Federal Government is involved in the decision to provide the Patriot systems to Ukraine, with the German government having announced its intention to provide two Patriot systems from the Bundeswehr to Ukraine.
A Patriot battery can track up to 50 targets and engage five simultaneously. The Patriot systems provided by Germany are used for combating larger aerial targets such as aircraft, drones, rockets, and cruise missiles.
To summarize, deliveries are underway with firm commitments for five systems jointly from Germany and the U.S., supported financially and logistically by NATO members and European partners. These systems will significantly boost Ukraine’s capacity to intercept complex aerial threats from Russia.
