German Parliament Denies Access Passes to AfD Parliamentary Staff - German legislative body denies issuing residential passes to AfD legislators

The German Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament, has denied house badges to several staff members of AfD MPs due to suspicions of unconstitutional activities. This decision was made after thorough security-critical findings from the necessary reliability check.

Julia Klöckner, the Parliament President (CDU), explained the necessity of these actions, stating that the multitude and severity of security-critical findings regarding the relevant MPs' staff members made it essential to reject the applications. She emphasised the importance of no justified doubt about the personal reliability of staff members with independent access to the buildings and IT systems of the Bundestag.

The AfD faction leader did not comment on the suspicions against the staff members. However, the AfD faction will support the MPs in clarifying the matter. The AfD, as a faction, does not have control over the granting or rejecting of house badges for their MPs' staff members.

The Bundestag President emphasised that granting the badges could pose a risk to the functionality, operability, security, integrity, or trustworthiness of the German Bundestag. He described the Bundestag as an open parliament that needs to be protected particularly.

The news was reported by the news agency AFP on Wednesday. The Bundestag's spokesman made the statement to the news agency, stating that three staff members of AfD MPs have had their requests for a house badge rejected. One staff member of an AfD MP has had access rights to the Bundestag's IT systems, including the intranet, withdrawn.

The decisions were based on potential misuse for unconstitutional purposes. The Bundestag's decisions continue to be based on security-critical findings from the necessary reliability check. The AfD faction does not have additional information on the specific security-critical findings against the staff members. The faction cannot provide any further information on the cases of the rejected staff members.

The employment of personal staff is solely the responsibility of the respective MPs. The AfD faction has not commented on whether they will take any action regarding the MPs who employed the staff members in question.

In conclusion, the German Bundestag has denied house badges to several staff members of AfD MPs due to suspicions of unconstitutional activities. The decisions were made after thorough security-critical findings from the necessary reliability check, and the Bundestag President emphasised the importance of maintaining the functionality, operability, security, integrity, and trustworthiness of the German Bundestag. The AfD faction has pledged to support their MPs in clarifying the matter, but they do not have control over the granting or rejecting of house badges for their MPs' staff members.
