After hanging up his skates, Sturm took over as the head coach of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) in 2015. His efforts led to a stunning silver medal for the German national team in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Following this, Sturm ventured back to the USA and joined the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant coach for four years. In 2022, he became the head coach of the Ontario Reign, the farm team of the California Kings, plotting a course to their third round in the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2024 with a sparkling record of 119-80-11-6.

Now, with a significant shift from the West Coast to the East Coast, Sturm prepares to tackle his next challenge in Boston. During his playing days, Sturm played for the Bruins, San Jose Sharks, Kings, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, and Florida Panthers, with his last stop being the Cologne Sharks in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in the 2012/13 season.
