After a decade of coaching experience and a successful stint as the head coach of the German national ice hockey team, Marco Sturm is making history by becoming the first German head coach in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Boston Bruins have named him as their new head coach for the upcoming season, marking a significant homecoming for the 46-year-old.
"It's an absolute honor to be named the head coach of the Boston Bruins," Sturm said, expressing his excitement about returning to a team that has always held a special place in his heart. "I know how much this team means to the city and our fans. I felt that passion as a player, and I can't wait to be behind the bench."
General Manager Don Sweeney shared the sentiments, saying, "Marco has impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion. He is a versatile coach who deserves this opportunity." Sturm's coaching journey includes a decade of experience, including his tenure as head coach of the Ontario Reign in the American Hockey League (AHL) and an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL.
Sturm's coaching career began after his playing days came to an end in 2013. Despite playing for multiple teams in the NHL, such as the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, and Florida Panthers, Sturm found his home with the Boston Bruins, where he played from 2005 to 2010.
In 2015, Sturm took over as the head coach of the German national ice hockey team, leading them to a sensational silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He returned to the USA in 2018, serving as an assistant coach for the Kings for four years before taking over as the head coach of the Ontario Reign in 2022.
Now, this West Coast native is returning to the East Coast to take on a new challenge. As a player, Sturm played a total of 1,006 games in the NHL, making a lasting impact on the league. His appointment as the head coach of the Boston Bruins is not only a personal milestone but also a significant moment for German ice hockey, as Sturm becomes the first German head coach in the NHL.
