German ice hockey celebrity assumes role as head coach in the National Hockey League
Unleashing Marco Sturm's Coaching Dream
Step into the coach's seat, Marco Sturm. The erstwhile winger for the Boston Bruins turned German national team coach has set his sights on the big leagues. With his appointment as the Bruins' head coach for the upcoming season, Sturm is stepping back into the home turf of Beantown, where he graced the ice from 2005 to 2010. The news was announced by General Manager Don Sweeney on a thunderous Thursday.
"We're damn proud to welcome Marco as the 30th head coach in Bruins history," Sweeney acclaimed. "His candidness, dedication, and enthusiasm were impressive at every turn. Marco is more than qualified, a chameleon coach well deserving of this opportunity."
Sturm, the native of Dingolfing, expressed his gratitude and excitement with fervor. "I'm over the moon to be named Boston Bruins' head coach. Boston has always had a special pull, and I know firsthand the passion that runs through this city and its fans. I tasted it as a player, and I can't wait to stand on the sidelines."
Silver Lining at the Olympics
Post-playing days, Sturm took on the helm of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) in 2015, powering the national team to a breathtaking silver medal victory at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. In 2018, Sturm made his way back to the US, joining the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant coach for four years. Most recently, he served as the head coach of the Ontario Reign, the AHL affiliate of the Kings.
Past, Present, and the Future
As the sun sets on Sturm's international coaching stint, he now turns his gaze back to his roots. The West Coast native, who made indelible marks on teams like Boston, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, and Cologne Sharks, is returning to the East Coast.
Now, Sturm embarks on a new adventure as he attempts to breathe life back into the Bruins—a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2016. Facing challenges unknown, he promises to draw from his experience and passion to guide the Bruins through the storm.
A European in the NHL
Sturm will make history as the first European coach in Bruins history and the first German coach in the NHL. As the countdown to the new season begins, the city of Boston eagerly awaits to rally behind their new golden boy.
