Icy rise? How expensive is an ice cream in the Southwest this year - German ice cream prices rise as costs for ingredients and energy climb

Ice cream lovers in Germany are facing higher prices this year. A survey shows that about one-third of shops have raised their scoop costs by 10 to 20 cents. The increases come as raw materials, energy, and wages grow more expensive across the country.

Over the past 12 months, prices climbed differently in each region. Baden-Württemberg saw a 4.2% rise, with a single scoop now costing between €1.80 and €2.50. Bavaria followed closely at 4.8%, while North Rhine-Westphalia experienced the sharpest increase at 5.1%. In Hesse, the rise was slightly lower at 3.9%. Eastern states like Saxony and Thuringia had smaller hikes, between 3.5% and 4.0%, partly due to lower local energy and ingredient costs.

Not all shops have passed on the extra costs. Some have kept prices steady, helped by stable ingredient supplies or the reduced VAT rate for takeaway ice cream. But for those that did raise prices, the main reasons were higher expenses for milk, sugar, and electricity, along with rising staff wages.

The future of ice cream pricing remains unclear. Geopolitical tensions and possible supplier price hikes could push costs even higher. For now, customers will need to adjust to the new rates at many parlours.
