Bayer Leverkusen Sign Dutch Under-21 International Ernest Poku
Bayer Leverkusen have bolstered their squad with the signing of Dutch Under-21 international Ernest Poku from AZ Alkmaar. The transfer deal, which runs until 2030, is reported to be worth around €10 million.
Poku, a 21-year-old winger, completed his medical with Leverkusen on Monday and is expected to wear squad number 19 at the club. His arrival at Leverkusen comes just before their upcoming DFB Cup match against Großaspach, suggesting that his debut for the club could be in this cup game early in the 2025/26 season.
Poku expressed his gratitude towards AZ and its fans in an Instagram post, stating "After almost four seasons, it feels like it is time to make a move." He thanked the AZ fans for their support, both in good and difficult times, and acknowledged his role in helping the team reach the knockout stages of the Europa League last term, registering three assists.
Poku's potential debut for Leverkusen could be a significant boost for coach Erik ten Hag, who is looking to reinforce his squad. The young Dutchman played an integral role in the Netherlands' Under-21 Euros campaign this summer, registering 11 goal contributions during his time with AZ and helping the team reach the semi-finals of the Under-21 Euros.
With a contract length of approximately five years, Poku is one of the recent young signings at Leverkusen aimed at reinforcing their squad under coach Erik ten Hag.
