Former Football Star Philipp Lahm Honoured with Federal Cross of Merit
Philipp Lahm, the renowned German footballer, was bestowed with the Federal Cross of Merit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on German Unity Day (October 3).
Lahm was one of 25 personalities to be honoured by President Steinmeier on October 1. The ceremony took place at Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the German head of state.
The Federal Cross of Merit was awarded to Lahm in recognition of his influence in German football and his commitment off the field, particularly after his 2014 World Cup victory. Lahm, who is known as 'Mr. Fairplay', has been actively promoting social and democratic values in several honorary positions.
Lahm's off-field commitment, however, was not specified in the earlier paragraphs. It is known that he has been supporting disadvantaged children and young people in Germany and South Africa through his foundation. He also served as the organizing chief of the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany.
