German football club SC Freiburg will face fresh guidelines in the 2025/26 season, according to the DFL's announcement.

In the upcoming 2025/26 Bundesliga season, the German Football League (DFL) is set to introduce a series of significant changes, aimed at enhancing transparency, technology, and fair play.

One of the most notable modifications is the public announcement of VAR decisions. Referees will now communicate their decisions to the stadium audience via headset microphones, immediately following a review on the pitch monitor or a change of decision based on VAR input. This initiative, already successfully piloted, will be implemented across all 36 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 stadiums from the first matchday. The announcements will also be integrated into live broadcasts, providing enhanced transparency for fans.

Another key change is the 'handshake dialogue' rule, which allows only the on-field captain (or a designated player if the captain is the goalkeeper) to communicate with referees. This regulation, already in effect in Germany, fosters structured dialogue and team responsibility during matches.

The DFL is also introducing a semi-automatic offside technology for the 2025/26 season. High-resolution cameras will capture 21 body points per player in 3D, allowing the technology to analyze players' positions and ball contacts in real-time. This cutting-edge technology is designed to quickly detect potential offsides, improving the accuracy and efficiency of offside decisions.

Additional contextual changes include stricter enforcement of the eight-second ball possession rule for goalkeepers, refined drop-ball procedures, and more frequent use of the RefCam, pending IFAB approval.

SC Freiburg, like other Bundesliga teams, will be subject to these league-wide reforms impacting referee communication, player tracking, and timekeeping. However, there are no club-exclusive changes for Freiburg specifically mentioned for the 2025/26 season.

In summary, the 2025/26 Bundesliga season focuses on increased transparency in refereeing, consolidates captain-only communication with referees, enhances technological support for offside decisions, and enforces stricter timing rules—all applicable to all teams, including SC Freiburg. These changes are expected to contribute to a more engaging and fair football experience for both players and fans.

  1. The European football leagues might consider adopting the 'handshake dialogue' rule, as it promotes structured dialogue and team responsibility during matches.
  2. With the successful implementation of semi-automatic offside technology in the Bundesliga, it's possible that European football leagues could also introduce similar technology to improve the accuracy and efficiency of offside decisions.
