German Conservatives Push for Climate Policy Review Amidst Economic Concerns

Germany's leading conservative politicians are reassessing the country's climate change policy. Andreas Jung, deputy chairman of the CDU, has called for a policy review, while Saxony's Minister-President Michael Kretschmer questions the achievability of the 2045 climate neutrality target.

The International Court of Justice has clarified that the 1.5-degree target is legally binding under international law. However, some leading politicians from the CDU and CSU are pushing for a review of Germany's climate change policy. Martin Huber, CSU General Secretary, advocates for 'reasonable climate change' that balances ecology and economy.

CDU MP Mark Helfrich warns against making Germany's economy uncompetitive due to climate change measures. Andreas Jung, deputy chairman of the CDU, demands a clear framework setting, pragmatism, openness, and more market economy in climate change policy. Kretschmer suggests discussing whether the 2045 climate neutrality target is achievable, proposing alternatives like 90% or 80% reduction.

Within the CDU and CSU, some politicians like Manfred Weber (CSU) and Friedrich Merz (CDU) have been involved in efforts to slow down EU climate change targets. They often prioritise liberal-conservative and economic interests over strict climate goals.

The Federal Constitutional Court has set a CO2 budget for Germany based on the Paris Climate Agreement. As the climate change debate intensifies, conservative politicians are calling for a balanced approach that considers both environmental and economic factors. The review of climate change policy aims to ensure Germany meets its international obligations while maintaining a competitive economy.
