Gearing up for the World Championships in Tokyo, the next German middle-distance marvel demonstrates world-class form. Just a few days after Frederik Ruppert's record-breaking sprint in the 3000 meters hurdles, Robert Farken, the sprightly 27-year-old, also breaks a long-standing German athletics record. With a time of 3:30.80 minutes in the 1500 meters, he effortlessly outpaces the old record of 3:31.58 minutes set by Thomas Wessinghage in 1980.
Making his first appearance in the 1500 meters, Farken improves his personal best by an impressive 1.3 seconds. In a stacked competition in Rome, he nabs the fourth spot, trailing behind Frenchman Azeddine Habz (3:29.72), Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot (3:29.75), and Moroccan Anass Essayi (3:30.74). Farken's time would've secured him the 13th place in the world rankings by year's end.
Sports "Bloody 'ell!" Marathon King Hendrik Pfeiffer feels robbed of the WM Representing the Speedshop-Team Leipzig, Farken already ran a new personal best of 1:45.45 minutes in the 800 meters back in late April, making him the second-speediest German runner over two laps in the last ten years. In the indoor season, Farken broke two German records, scoring 3:33.14 in the 1500 meters and 1609 meters (3:49.44 for the traditional mile). Farken has been playing a strong early-season game for the World Championships in Tokyo (13-21 September).
Late May saw Frederik Ruppert crack another long-standing record by the German Athletics Federation. In the 3000 meters hurdles, the 28-year-old clocked 8:01.49 minutes, besting everyone from the previous year. At the Diamond League meeting in Rabat, this time earned him second place behind the Moroccan Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali. The German record, which had stood at 8:09.49 minutes since 1999, set by Damian Kallabis, was previously Ruppert's best time from the 2024 European Championships, at 8:15.08 minutes.
