German Commissioner Calls for AfD Cooperation to Shift Migration Policy
Stefan Kerth, the independent county commissioner of Vorpommern-Rügen, has sparked debate by calling for the dismantling of the firewall with the AfD. He argues that the current migration policy is unsustainable and believes that a shift is impossible without the AfD's involvement.
Kerth left the SPD in 2023 due to disagreements over migration policy. He believes that Germany's rush back into a migration policy similar to the Third Reich, without a firewall, is dangerous. He argues that the AfD's presence is necessary for a policy shift, citing a 'loss of control' since 2015.
Kerth suggests that the Union should set conditions for cooperation with the AfD, including specific persons, activities, and program points to be abandoned. He believes that the firewall has strengthened the AfD and hinders migration policy shifts within the Union.
In the upcoming state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the AfD is polling at 38 percent, the SPD at 19 percent, and the CDU at 13 percent. Kerth advocates for the CDU to open up to coalitions and political cooperation beyond left-wing parties, suggesting a partnership of SPD, Left, CDU, and Greens without the AfD.
Kerth does not see the AfD's participation in government as a danger, stating that 'the world doesn't end' when nationalist right-wing parties govern. However, the AfD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is currently experiencing an internal power struggle about who will be the party's candidate at the September 2023 state election, with two state chairmen, Leif-Erik Holm and Enrico Schult, both intending to run as the candidate for Minister-President.
Stefan Kerth's call to dismantle the firewall with the AfD has raised questions about the future of migration policy and coalition politics in Germany. With the AfD polling high in upcoming elections, Kerth's views on cooperation with the party may influence the political landscape. However, the internal power struggle within the AfD and differing opinions on migration policy within the Union make the future uncertain.
