German Civil Service appoints Volker Geyer as its new leader

In a significant shift for the DBB Beamtenbund und Tarifunion, Volker Geyer has been elected as the new federal chairman. Geyer, who took over from the late Ulrich Silberbach, was unanimously voted in with 138 out of 139 votes.

Geyer, who hails from a guild background similar to that of the new post-political spokesman, Alexander Dobrindt, has made it clear that his focus is on the protection of civil servants and restoring trust in democratic institutions. He has also emphasized the importance of preventive measures and consistent prosecution in addressing attacks on public servants.

The new DBB chairman has been at the helm for a year due to Silberbach's illness and subsequent resignation. Silberbach, who led the union for eight years, had 1.3 million members under his tenure.

In a bid to address the pressing issue of infrastructure, the federal government has proposed a special fund for investment. However, concerns have been raised about the cleanliness of government work in the implementation of such projects in the past. Notably, the DBB trade union has expressed its support for this initiative.

Geyer has also emphasized the need for the transfer of collective bargaining agreement results to federal civil servants and the revision of their remuneration to ensure constitutional compliance of their salaries. He has mentioned "transfer of the tariff result" and "constitutionally compliant salary" as two keywords in his speech.

The annual conference of the DBB trade union will move from Cologne to Berlin in 2027. For detailed plans or specific actions as the chairman, further information or direct statements from Volker Geyer or the DBB would be necessary.
