Sled Dog Showdown in Germany's Muddy Plate

Racing through the quagmire, Germany's top sled dog athletes gathered in Plate, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, over the weekend. The dryland version of the German Sled Dog Championship unfolded here from Saturday to Sunday, showcasing the energetic and resilient performance of both humans and canines even on non-snowy terrain.

The title, "Dryland," refers to the event's occurrence on dry ground, marking a contrast to more traditional snowy races. Johannes Heyn, a representative from the Association of German Sled Dog Sports Clubs, shared, "We had about two to three centimeters of snow on Saturday morning, but it melted away fairly quickly." With that, the competition evolved into a muddy, high-speed thrill.

Applauded by over 140 enthusiastic "mushers" – or drivers – and almost a thousand powerful dogs, the motorcross park in Plate became the epicenter of the Dryland Championship's festivities. Among the mushers, Candy Zebedies shared, "The wheels carts here are pulled by four, six, or even eight dogs over a span of 5.2 kilometers. And with speeds reaching up to 45 kilometers per hour, this is truly an exhilarating spectacle of speed and agility."

In addition, the event presented various categories apart from the wheeled cart races. Canicross, sporting runners and their dogs in a running marathon, was one of the much-anticipated segments, as was the bike and dog category, and the scooter and dog category.

As mud splashed and energy surged, the costumes of the mushers and their boundless animals added splashes of color to the event, creating a lively and spirited atmosphere. Even under less than favorable weather conditions, the inherent thrill and loyalty between dogs and their mushers shone through, making the competition an engaging experience for visitors.
