German Biathlete Laura Dahlmeier (aged 31) was officially pronounced dead without any indications of a rescue attempt

Laura Dahlmeier, the double Olympic champion and seven-time world champion in biathlon, tragically lost her life on July 28, 2025, during a mountaineering expedition on Laila Peak in the Karakorum mountain range. She was 31 years old.

The accident occurred at approximately 5,700 meters in the Pakistani Karakorum range, when Dahlmeier was struck by a rockfall. Despite immediate rescue efforts, the operation was called off due to dangerous conditions, and her body was not recovered, as it was deemed too risky for rescuers[1][2][3][4].

According to information from her management and the circumstances of the accident, Dahlmeier had expressed the wish to leave her body on the mountain. Her family and management have asked for this wish to be respected, given her long-term passion for mountaineering and her awareness of alpine risks[1][3][4].

Her rope partner, Marina Krauss, called for help and attempted to retrieve her for many hours, but was unable to due to difficult terrain and continued rockfall. A military helicopter spotted Dahlmeier on July 29 with no signs of life[5].

The sudden death of Dahlmeier has shocked the sporting world. In her final wish, she wrote that no one should risk their life to retrieve her in such a situation[6]. The family thanks the rescue team and the climbers who came to help, who did everything possible to enable a rescue[7].

After retiring from her career in biathlon in 2019, Dahlmeier remained loyal to the sport as a ZDF TV expert and passionately pursued mountaineering. Her tragic death leaves a void in the sporting world and among all those who knew and admired her[8][9].
