German Athletic Champions: Mihambo and Ogunleye
In the lead-up to the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, several German athletes have impressed at the national championships. Among them, Chiara Sistermann stands out as a promising talent to watch, particularly in the pole vault discipline.
Sistermann, the 2022 German U20 Champion, recently won a silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships with a vault of 4.30m. She also secured medals at the German Indoor Championships and has shown strong performances in 2024 collegiate events, indicating promising development.
In the discus throw event, Henrik Janssen claimed the title with a distance of 68.41 meters. Janssen and Steven Richter are likely to secure two of the three starting places for the event at the World Championships, as they both met the Tokyo WM norm. Richter finished second with a distance of 68.27 meters, just 0.14 meters shy of Janssen.
Mihambo, the 2021 Olympic champion, also made her mark in the long jump event. She initially had two invalid attempts before securing her title with a jump of 6.82 meters. Mihambo mentioned that she knew she had to perform well in the final three rounds.
In the shot put event, Yemisi Ogunleye won the German championship with a distance of 19.29 meters. Ogunleye is not only the German champion but also the shot put Olympic champion. Katharina Maisch finished third with a distance of 18.31 meters, while Alina Kenzel took second place with a distance of 18.56 meters.
Mohamed Abdilaahi finished third in the 1,500-meter event with a time of 3:48.10. Meanwhile, Robert Farken won the 1,500-meter title with a time of 3:46.96 minutes.
It's worth noting that Malaika Mihambo won her 15th German championship title in athletics, further cementing her status as one of Germany's top athletes.
Despite facing technical issues a week ago at the Berlin ISTAF, Yemisi Ogunleye managed to win the German championship in shot put, demonstrating her resilience and determination.
While Sistermann stands out as a key German athlete to watch at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, other talented athletes such as Janssen, Richter, Mihambo, Ogunleye, Abdilaahi, Farken, Maisch, Kenzel, and Mihambo will also be representing Germany in various events.
