Alpine Club Sets Course for Sustainable Mountain Huts - German Alpine Club Unveils Bold Plan for Sustainable Mountain Huts by 2030

The German Alpine Club (DAV) has launched the Hut Guide 2030, a new policy aimed at making mountain huts and trails more sustainable. Developed with input from regional Alpine clubs, environmental groups, and local authorities, the framework sets clear standards for eco-friendly operations across hundreds of sites.

The DAV, which oversees 325 huts and 220 climbing facilities, worked alongside partners like the Austrian Alpine Club, the South Tyrol Alpine Club, and its own Youth division to shape the guidelines. These rules cover everything from energy use to food sourcing, requiring huts to rely on renewable power, minimise technical infrastructure, and serve meals made from local, low-emission ingredients.

The Hut Guide 2030 will reshape how mountain huts operate, prioritising sustainability in construction, energy, and food. With input from multiple Alpine clubs and local bodies, the policy sets a long-term direction for preserving trails and facilities while reducing environmental impact.
