German Adventurer Michael Walther Paddles Alone Across Atlantic on Stand-Up Paddleboard

Michael Walther, a German adventurer, is currently undertaking an extraordinary feat - crossing the Atlantic alone on a stand-up paddleboard. He began his journey on September 19, 2025, from Portugal, aiming to reach French Guiana in South America after about three months at sea.

Walther is paddling towards his goal, having already spent around 90 hours on his six-meter offshore stand-up paddleboard. He expects to reach the 100-hour mark soon. His journey covers approximately 6,000 kilometers of open sea, with Walther paddling up to 15 hours each day. He is documenting his progress with a live tracker on his board.

In addition to the physical challenge, Walther is also collecting scientific data for the Alfred Wegener Institute. He is recording hydrophone recordings of sea sounds, which will contribute to our understanding of marine life and the impact of climate change on ocean ecosystems.

Walther's board is equipped with a self-righting system and solar panels for energy supply, demonstrating his commitment to sustainable resource use. He is using this expedition to raise awareness about the consequences of climate change and the importance of protecting our planet.

Michael Walther's solo Atlantic crossing is more than just a test of endurance; it's a mission to highlight the pressing issue of climate change. With around 6,000 kilometers still to paddle, Walther is expected to reach French Guiana in the coming months, having made approximately four million paddle strokes. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for sustainable practices and climate protection.
